Some Remodel Progress….

Hello everyone!  I hope you had a fantastic Easter weekend!  We sure did!  We celebrated my son’s 4th birthday, Easter and the kickoff of soccer season.  We intended to take a break from our remodel, but my hubs wasn’t having it.  He’s ready for it to be over!

We finally made a decision on flooring in our master, and although it wasn’t tile like I originally planned, I think I’m much happier with our choice.  After some research we chose to go with natural bamboo and it turned out fantastic!  It is so warm and spa like.  (More details on that later.)

Our master bathroom has two parts.  It has a closed off toilet/shower part and a vanity and tub part that is open to our room.  The builder actually put carpet in the tub/vanity area and that just grosses me out!  It looked terrible.  We are recarpeting our master and there is no way I’m putting carpet back into the bathroom, so we had to make a decision on flooring. At some point I need to come up with a way to close off the bathroom to our bedroom.  Maybe a curtain?  Sliding barn door (I’m loving the looks of those!) Hmmm…I’ll tackle that at a later date.  For now I just want to get this remodel done!

This is our bathroom with its disgusting dingy carpet:

The pictures actually makes it look better than it is.

So this weekend my husband tore it all out and started to lay the bamboo.

He got all the floor laid, but we still need to caulk and paint the base trim. Stay tuned for the final reveal…

We got a little further on our dining room too!  I had no idea how much work it would be to prep, caulk, and sand all of that trim!

Even with tenting it off, there was no containing the dust.  My hubs keeps informing me that dusting at this point is like shoveling snow while it’s still snowing, so for now it will just keep driving me nuts.

We had drywall to repair:

And a ceiling to repair and remud:

For this part we called in a professional.  There are just some things that you’re better off not doing yourself. So there it is.  I can’t wait to show you the completed project!  We are getting there!  Thanks for all of your comments and opinions about refinishing the stairs.  I think I’ve made a decision and I’ll post about that sometime soon.  It won’t be long now!  Thanks for coming by!

I need your help on this decision! (Carpet vs refinishing stairs)

Hello!  I hope everyone is having a great Spring Break!  Our’s is over and it was pretty uneventful.  We worked outside a bit and got the boat back from the shop WAHOO!!! It still hasn’t been nice enough to take it out, but soon, very soon.

I’ve been agonizing over some of the final decisions regarding our remodel.  I currently  have ugly, dirty carpet on my stairs and I’m waiting for the glorious moment that I get to rip it all off!  The problem is that I want to leave it off, as in have beautiful wood stairs like these:

And these:

I just can’t stand carpet on stairs.  It always looks dirty and worn out, also, who want’s to lug the vacuum onto stairs anyway?

I’ve read some fabulous blog posts about ripping off the carpet and refinishing the stairs DIY style for next to nothing, but when I pulled back my carpet I didn’t find nice wood underneath, but rather ugly plywood that can’t be refinished.  It would have to be replaced with new treads and risers.  Boo.   I priced out replacing it and it would be approximately $30.00 a stair for unfinished wood.  That translates to $450 for the whole set, not to mention what it would take for refinishing supplies.  So I’m trying to decide if I should carpet them for around $250, or go the extra mile and refinish them, which I know I will eventually want to do anyway.  Hmmmm.

Another option would be to carpet the stairs in a different pattern than the rest of the house.   Something like this:

Or this:

Only mine wouldn’t look that fabulous because even in this picture you still see beautiful wood stairs.

Sorry the pictures are so small.  That seemed to be the only size I could make them.  So what do you think?  Spend the extra and refinish them now, or carpet for now with plans to finish them later? So many choices!  I need your help! Thanks for coming by!

How We Spent Our Weekend…

Want to see what a fun weekend at our house looks like?  Well not every weekend, but here’s what our last one looked like:

That’s my husband’s “I’ve had enough of this remodel” look.  But then….his brothers showed up and the night turned into this:

Everything gets better once your family shows up, right?  Especially if they bring Crown Royal.  Why do boys always have to wrestle when they get together?

The next morning the real work started:

 It was intense…

They made some great progress

But it wasn’t all work…

There were s’mores and fun times with cousins, and I’m not sure what is going on here, but Brady looks like he’s having fun

Kash was having a great time

It’s always a good time when these guys are around

Gentry loved having her aunt, uncles, and cousin here

And by the time the weekend was done….we had this:

That’s all I’m gonna show for now, because it’s still not completely finished, but we’re getting there!  Thanks for coming by!

Tearin’ Down The Walls!

Hello everyone!  Hope you had a great weekend!  You don’t even want to know what we’ve been doing around here….Let’s just start with this. Here are some pictures I’ve been drooling over for months:

I LOVE those columns!  They are so elegant.  Here are a couple more pictures:

So I decided that we needed to tear down a wall and get some columns…Here is our perfectly good wall before:

It was either an office or a dining room.  My hubs and I are not home office kind of people, so we are going for a dining room/living room extension.  That wall is blocking the main window looking out of the front of the house.

The other thing that drives me batty is that the entryway is so narrow.  I had to walk way out into the living room just to see who was at my door.

So after a huge mess and a ton of work, we had this:

Now for building those headers…ugh…those are support walls.  Then for rerouting all that electrical…double ugh…Good things my hubs is so amazing (aren’t you glad you aren’t married to me?  We don’t go on vacation.  No sirreee…We remodel!)  We got a couple of estimates for this little remodel of ours, the lowest being $9000.00.

$9000 is completely ridiculous to me, considering this is almost all labor!  So what do you do when the bid comes in too high?  You do it yourself!  And if you can’t figure out the electrical or the headers?  You buy a book and learn.  Seriously…We are doing this remodel for under $1200.00.  That’s a savings of $7800.00!!

I couldn’t be prepared for the mess that removing drywall makes!  It helps when you have a cute little helper.

Of course we are nowhere near done, but I love the openness already!  I can tell that this was a good decision for us!  After the wall we are replacing the flooring and a few other things, then we are gonna relax for a while.  I’ll update along the way.  Just wanted to give you a sneak peek for now.  And….I did finish my closet/office makeover, I just need to find the time to blog about it, so that is on its way, but for now, I’m off to get a building permit!  Have a great day!  Thanks for coming by!
